Excerpt from There Are No Saints

Cole Blackwell

We’re about to enter the junior studio on the opposite side of the building when Mara catches up with me.

“Excuse me!” she pants, her cheeks flaming pink. “Could I speak to Mr. Blackwell for a moment?”

The other panel members turn to look at me, to see if I’ll comply.

Sonia is particularly curious. She knew something was up the moment I told her to offer Mara the studio. The discounted rate was a fabrication, invented by me on the spot. The same with this grant. It’s all leverage to get Mara right where I want her: completely at my mercy.

“Of course,” I say quietly. “The rest of you go on without me. I’ll join you momentarily.”

I lead Mara down the hall to an empty studio several doors down. I step into the clean, deserted space. She hesitates in the doorway, afraid to be alone with me.

“Are you coming?” I ask, eyebrow raised.

Pressing her lips together, she marches into the room, closing the door behind her.

I wait for her to speak, watching the rapid rise and fall of her chest, thrilling at the hectic spots of color on her cheeks.

She’s illuminated with fury, eyes blazing, cheeks flaming. Her dark hair swirls around her face, defying gravity from the pure electric tension between us. Her thin hands tremble, and she digs her nails into the thighs of her jeans.

“I know it was you,” she says, her voice low and hoarse.

I’m enjoying this so much I can hardly stand it. Her rage, her fear, and the delicious predicament I put her in, all mixed together in a potent cocktail. Her expression of shock when she saw my face, and the awful struggle as she had to discuss her work with the panel, while her brain must have been twisting and turning inside her skull . . . I’m so glad I have it all recorded. I can’t wait to watch it over again tonight.

“What was me?” I say mildly.

You know,” she hisses. Her whole body is shaking. I’d like to hold her against me, to feel those tremors vibrating through my frame . . .

“Please explain.”

Her eyes glint with tears of fury, but she refuses to let them fall. Her lips are swollen and chapped, as if she’s been biting at them . . .

“Someone snatched me off the street. They tied me up, cut my wrists, and left me in the woods. You were there. I saw you. You stood over me, staring at me. You saw I needed help. And you walked right over me. You left me there to die.”

“What a bizarre accusation,” I say. “Do you have any proof?”

I know she doesn’t. I just want to see how she’ll respond.

I saw you,” she hisses. “I’ll tell the cops.”

“I don’t think that’s a very good idea.” I tuck my hands in my pockets, tilting my head as I look at her. “That would cause a lot of problems for you. You’d lose the studio, of course. The grant, too.”

“Are you threatening me?” Her voice rises, the edge of hysteria sharp as razor wire. “Why are you doing this? Why did you do this to me?”

She holds up her arm so her loose bell sleeve drops away, revealing the long, jagged scar across the wrist. The scar is still healing, raised like a welt on the skin.

“I didn’t do that,” I scoff.

Mara falters, her upraised hand dropping an inch.

Interesting—she doesn’t actually know who cut her.

“You were there,” she insists.

“So what if I was?”

She startles, shocked that I admitted it.

“Then you did this!” she shrieks.

“No,” I growl. “I didn’t.”

In one swift step, I close the space between us. Mara tries to turn and run, but I’m much too fast for her. I seize her by the arm, yanking her toward me, holding up that accusing hand and branded wrist.

I look down into her terrified face, pinning her in place with my gaze as much as my fingers locked around her wrist.

“There’s no limit on predators in the world,” I hiss. “And no lack of damaged girls to attract them.”

Can this skeptical player let down his guard long enough to let love into his life, or is this forbidden romance a train wreck in the making?

Ryan James doesn’t believe in love.

It’s a truth he learned early in life. A truth he carried with him into adulthood. He broke his golden rule one time, but Myndi trampled all over his heart, cementing his belief that love is a lie and not worth the effort.

Now he’s returned to his cynical views and promiscuous lifestyle, racking up more notches on his bedpost than he can count.

Until Summer Petersen comes crashing into his world, threatening to knock down his walls with her tempting body and sunny, sweet personality.

Summer is determined to lose her V-card before she starts freshman year of college, and the hot, older guy with the cute dimples, dazzling smile, and rippling biceps is just the man for the job. Ryan doesn’t take much persuading, and he rocks her world, giving her a night to remember.

When they walk away, there’s an unspoken agreement it was a one-time thing. Ryan doesn’t do feelings, and Summer doesn’t want to be tied down at eighteen.

But when she moves into her brother Austin’s apartment, she’s shocked to discover her new roomie is the guy who recently popped her cherry.

Ryan can’t believe he slept with Austin’s baby sister, and if he finds out, he’ll literally kill him. Keeping their hook up a secret is nonnegotiable. Keeping his thoughts, and his hands, off Summer, less so. Because the longer he’s around her, the more he finds himself catching feelings for the gorgeous brunette.

Summer doesn’t want to care for her older brother’s best friend, but Ryan makes her feel things she’s never felt before, and she’s slowly falling under his spell.

Embarking on an illicit affair behind Austin’s back has train wreck written all over it, but provided they keep their feelings in check, they can end this before he ever finds out.

It’s not like either of them is in love.

Right?

This is a full length 80,000 word STANDALONE new adult romance. Not recommended for readers under the age of eighteen due to mature content. This is the second book in a duet, although both books can be read as standalone romances as they focus on different couples.

Protecting You by Lena Hendrix Blog Tour

Protecting You, an all-new emotional second-chance romance from Lena Hendrix, is available now!

One moment of hesitation and I lost Maggie forever.

Since then, we’ve spent the last 15 years in this small town circling each other and pretending neither remembers how right it felt when we were best friends.

Now she’s a single mom and she doesn’t need a “broody, grumpy cop” like me complicating her life. No matter how many times her heated gaze scorches my skin, I can never have her in the way I want.

Completely.

So I push her away—but it’s for her own good.

Because if she knew the truth of what I did, she wouldn’t just have hurt feelings, she would truly hate me.

She has a guarded heart and it’s all my fault.

But I don’t have a heart at all. I gave it to Maggie O’Brien a long time ago.

Excerpt

As we inched closer toward Maggie, I could see her partner was getting bolder, pressing his hips into her ass as they swayed. She pulled away, turning to push her palm against his chest. A low rumble vibrated within me at seeing him completely oblivious to her discomfort. The song faded, and I thanked Casey Mae for the dance, effectively dismissing her and ignoring the pout she clicked into place.

Two steps forward and I was pressed against Maggie’s back, my hand wrapping possessively around her trim waist. “You okay, doll?” My voice rumbled low against the shell of her ear.

“There you are!” Her eyes were wild as she turned and threw herself around my neck. Instinct took over, and I wrapped her in my arms. For a moment, I pulled her close to me, drowning in the warmth of her body, the delicate scent of floral perfume and her skin. My cock thickened at the closeness of Maggie’s body pressed against mine.

I’ve waited fifteen years for this.

Maggie still clung to me as I shot her dance partner prick a murderous glare. He took one step back, both palms in the air. Shaking his head, he backed away and wound himself around the next girl who smiled in his direction.

I should stop touching her. Let her go.

I couldn’t. Maggie hadn’t released her arms from around my neck, and I couldn’t force myself to peel my arms off her. Instead, I took a deep inhale of her sexy, floral scent and filed it away in my memory for later. Around us, the mood shifted. The lights slanted, and the low bass of a slow country song reverberated through the speakers.

Instead of releasing my shoulders, Maggie’s plush hips began to sway. “I think he’s still watching,” she whispered against my skin.

“Definitely,” I said. That douche had all but forgotten about us, but if that was what she thought, I was going with it.

One hand ran up her back, settling between her shoulder blades, and I pulled her chest against mine. I knew it was a mistake. My carefully crafted detachment was the only way I knew how to protect her from all my bullshit. Her heart hammered through the delicate fabric of her top, and I could feel the diamond tips of her nipples press against me.

I swallowed a groan as we swayed and moved to the music. Slow, practiced breathing was the only thing that kept me from completely unraveling in her arms. Up close, Maggie was even more beautiful than I could stand.

She was everything I needed but had no right to want. Not after what I had done. I shoved my demons down and focused on the fact that Maggie O’Brien was swaying in my arms, humming along with the band.

“You smell nice,” she said quietly. Her voice was barely audible above the noise in the bar.

“Mmm,” I harrumphed, unable to form a coherent thought, let alone actual words. A thousand thoughts tumbled through my head, but I couldn’t seem to find a way to give voice to a single one.

You smell nice too.

I miss you.

This feels too good.

The song faded, melted into a new one, and my ability to form a singular thought returned. My back stiffened as I pulled to my full height, causing her fingers to untangle from my hairline. The cold left behind by the absence of her hands prickled down my spine.

What the fuck are you doing? You’ve done nothing but ruin her entire life.

Dread pooled in my stomach as I thought back to all the choices that brought us here, all the things that I had done. I thought of David. I had no right to enjoy the feel of Maggie’s soft breath tangling with mine.

Steadying her on her feet, I held her at arm’s length and leveled my breathing. Her long fingers curled around my wrists, pushing against my pulse points as they hammered against her fingertips.

I’d let it go too far. How had I let her creep past my defenses and seep into my bones? The swirling greens and amber of her eyes burned into me. Everyone around us melted away.

I could do it. I could pull her into me and crush that full mouth against mine and finally claim her.

“Cole . . .” Maggie took the tiniest step toward me.

I swallowed past the gravel in my throat.

“You need to be more responsible.” I pushed past the undulating crowd, fleeing before I could do something epically stupid, like finally caving to my deepest desires. Bitter self-loathing washed over me as I caught the disgusted look that marred Maggie’s gorgeous face. I’d hurt her with the very words I knew would cut deep. But I had to protect her, and her heart.

Even if it cost me everything.

Out of Bounds by Khardine Gray Blog Tour

How did I end up marrying my high school bully?

Out of Bounds, an all-new enemies to lovers standalone romance by USA Today bestselling author Khardine Gray is now available!

I first met Ethan Carson when I was ten.

One look and I knew he was trouble.

He could charm you with his striking blue eyes, his killer smile, and a face that was

made for Hollywood. But look closer and you’ll see the devil incarnate who was

always a breath away from juvie.

To say we were mortal enemies growing up is an understatement.

I avoided him then, and I continue to do so now, even though he’s a cop—who would

have thought?

My avoidance tactics worked until the day I needed him.

I took one tiny trip to Vegas, where we ended up drinking far too much.

Big mistake-as in the mother of all mistakes.

We woke up the next morning in bed!

And neither of us can remember what happened.

But wait, it gets worse. So much worse.

That’s not the only thing we did.

The come-to-Jesus moment hits when I see the wedding ring on my finger.

We got married!

I married the devil.

Of course, I want this craziness fixed—ended—returned to the world where I’m not

his Mrs.

But he wants us to stay together because he has other ideas.

When he makes me an offer I can’t refuse, I might be desperate enough to accept.

I just hope I don’t lose more than I bargained for in this outlandish scheme.

Like my heart.

Excerpt

“Maybe if we can remember where we got married we can go back there and tell them we were drunk and made a mistake, so they can fix it.” She’s flipping out. I can see it. “This is Vegas people must do this craziness all the time right?”

“Yeah, yeah,” I agree just to humor her.

“It could be done within the hour, and we could go home and laugh about it and tell everyone we were screwing with them.”

The quiver in her voice suggests she’s about to break. I might make her break faster because even though this is Vegas, you can’t get a marriage annulled within an hour.

“Bree. It’s not exactly as simple as that. It won’t happen that quickly.”

“Well, how long do you think it might take?”

Last I heard it might be a week and that’s if you can get through all the paperwork on time, but I won’t tell her that.

An idea forms in my mind as I stare at her and see how much she’s freaking out.

“It’s going to take a while, Bree. What if I get all the paperwork and take care of everything as best as I can while I put you on a flight home.”

“Home,” she mumbles.

“Yeah. Do you want to go home?”

“Yes, are you sure?”

“Yes.” It’s best if I’m not around her. I need to think.

I married Bree Dawson. Married the girl I used to pick on at school like I breathed air.

Her the goody-two-shoes southern belle and me the kid who was always in and out of juvie.

I married her and I can’t even remember saying I do.
