Review

Booker melted my heart. He had a lot of hurt in his young life, including his mom dying when he was young, but I think the hurt he suffered when Poppy left was even worse. Poppy was his best friend and the only person who saw him for him. When she moved he was lost and became someone he didn't even recognize. Six years later, Poppy is moving back to their hometown and is going to have to commute to get to work. He insists that she live with him, for safety purposes. She agrees and they both believe they can just keep it friends.
Poopy left because she saw something she never thought she would and her heart was broken. She was keeping a secret from Booker and was going to fess up, but left town instead. When she comes back to town, she is grateful, but wants to keep it at the friend level to protect herself. When they have a couple of missteps, they both start avoiding the other, but hate that their relationship is strained.
Can Booker open his heart and realize that letting someone in doesn't mean that they will leave? Will he ever accept that he has feelings for Poppy, beyond friendship? Well Poopy ever tell Booker what she saw? Will she tell him the secret she had been keeping for years? When he pushes her away after she admits two truths to him, will she be able to forgive and move on?
There were a few times I wanted to strangle both Poppy and Booker throughout this book, but I was rooting for them the whole time.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest, voluntary review.
